dc.description.abstract Socialism, secularism and establishment of public welfare society have been the ideals of Indian democracy. India is declared a secular state in the Indian Constitution. When the secular republic was established in 1950, it was hoped that communal feelings would diminish as a result of the spread of education and industrialization. But till date we have not been completely successful in achieving the goal of secularism. Secularism is a value which should be supported and expressed in the education system of the country. Society, culture and education mutually create secularism. It is helpful in this, because on one hand the function of education is to preserve and transfer the culture, while on the other hand it is also to refine and create the culture according to the needs of the society. Since ancient times in India, this aspect of society, culture and education has been used. The importance of education for mutual relations and social progress has been understood. According to Lunia, (1985) - "Education is essential not only for individual, social and national progress but also for the development of civilization and culture. Indians had understood this profound importance of education and hence in the distant past of India Beautiful arrangements for education were also made." The important role of education in the formation of the present Indian society cannot be denied en_US
