Abstract: Education is the most important invention of mankind. Without education man would still be living like an animal. This is a teaching which transformed man from animal to human. The word education is like a diamond which appears to be of different colors when seen from different corners. Man's education does not start from school. It starts from birth. It ends not when he graduates from university but upon his death. Therefore, education is a lifelong process. The word education has been defined in different ways by different thinkers. Where Indian thought has adopted a spiritual stick-on regarding the concept of education. Whereas Western thought has adopted a practical approach. According to John Dewey, education is the development of all those abilities in the individual which enable him to control his environment and fulfill his potential. Knowledge as the center of education The word Veda means knowledge. In Rigveda, education has been understood as something that makes a human being self-reliant and selfless. Education in the Upanishads is that whose end product is salvation.
