Abstract: This paper attempts to present a sample module on teaching reading skills using an excerpt from a novel by the Indian English writer, Manju Kapur. The paper examines the theoretical perspectives on using literature in the language classroom and then goes on to discuss the sub-skills approach to teaching the reading skill. Based on these theoretical perspectives, the literary text is chosen and the module is designed, taking into consideration the target learners and the skills to be focused on.
