Abstract: This study attempted to investigate the perceptions of postgraduate learners in Arunachal Pradesh towards academic writing. Many studies show that L2 writers face varying degrees of difficulty coping with the writing demands at higher educational institutions. A preliminary study was conducted in this regard in the three premier institutes of Arunachal Pradesh located in the state capital, Itanagar. A questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews were carried out to explore the learners’ perceptions of academic writing. The results suggest that, in spite of positive attitudes and awareness of the integrative and instrumental orientation of academic writing skills, the majority of the learners lack proficiency in academic writing. Majority of them wanted an academic writing course to be included in the university course curriculum.
