Summary: Abstract This study explored, using a qualitative research design, the experiences of chemistry laboratory staff and students engaged in chemistry laboratory exercises delivered online. The research was completed over two semesters for the academic year 2020–2021 at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus in Trinidad and Tobago. The group of interviewees (N = 34) included 18 staff members and 16 level 1 undergraduates, all engaged in the level one chemistry course CHEM 1070 - Introductory Chemistry Laboratory, a year-long, 3-credit course. The data collection was done in semistructured interviews, and the thematic analysis method using NVivo was used for analysis of the data. The themes that emerged included the perceived importance of laboratories, unfamiliarity with online teaching and learning, lack of training with the online platform, lack of confidence in the process, issues with method of delivery, and opinions and recommendations on the future use of online laboratories.
